For Raleigh-based artist Omar Njai, known as Omar The One, music has always been more than sound, it has been a calling. What started as a hobby has grown into a full-fledged career, with Omar carving out his own lane as a versatile creator determined to stay authentic and independent.
“I’ve always loved music since I was a kid,” he shares. “But what made me get into it seriously was feeling like I had something to say. My music is different from everyone else, whether it’s the subject matter, the types of beats, songwriting, or melody. I want people to feel something real when they hear my work.”
That emphasis on honesty has become a cornerstone of his artistry. Unlike many who stick to one lane, Omar thrives on freedom. His catalog spans R&B, acoustic, pop, EDM, and more. “Versatility and free, that’s how I’d describe my style,” he says. “I don’t want to be boxed in.”
Even with that creative passion, the road has not been easy. Balancing long hours at his job while building a career in music has tested his discipline. “Sometimes I work 12 or 13 hours a day, even seven days straight,” he admits. “It can be exhausting. But I created a schedule that allows me to focus on music again, and that keeps me grounded.”
That commitment is fueled by something deeper than financial gain. “Even if I didn’t make any money from it, I’d still do it,” Omar says. “It started out as a hobby, and now it’s a career I’m grateful for.”
One of his proudest achievements is owning his music outright. He controls his releases, publishing, and catalog, a deliberate move to secure long-term generational wealth. “Being able to release music whenever I want and own everything is huge,” he explains. “It’s about building something lasting while still being free to explore every genre I love.”
That independence shines through in his latest release, Take A Breath, an upbeat EDM track he produced and wrote himself. “It’s a vibrant song, and I really love it,” Omar says. “It makes you feel good every time you listen.”
